At Coleshill Heath School, we work closely with the Community Speech And Language Therapy team (SALT) to support children and their families.

Due to the close nature of the work we do, we are able to identify signs that children may need intervention early on during their time in school.

If children have any of the following, they may need a referral to the SALT team:

  • Mild, moderate or sever learning difficulties
  • Physical disabilities
  • Language delays
  • Specific language impairment
  • Specific difficulties in productring sounds
  • Hearing impairment
  • Cleft palate
  • Stammering
  • Autism or social interaction difficulties
  • Dyslexia
  • Voice disorders
  • Selective mutism
  • Swallowing difficulties

Speech and Language therapists work with parents and carers to assess if a child has speech and/ or language, communication, or eating and drinking difficulties. They will consider what support and interventions children may need to support them.

Anyone, including parents can refer to Speech and Language Therapy. If anyone other than the parent is referring a child, the referral must always be made with parents’ consent. If you have any concerns or worries about your child’s speech, please speak to their class teacher or myself.

WHY DO SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPISTS SEE CHILDREN?

As communication skills are crucial for intellectual, educational, social and emotional development, Speech and Language Therapists work with children and young people who have problems with understanding, expressing themselves and using communication to socialise appropriately. They also work with children and young people who have difficulty with eating, drinking and/or swallowing.

WHO DO SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPISTS WORK WITH?

Speech and Language Therapists work in close partnership with the child and their family, education, social work, other healthcare professionals and the voluntary sector.

WHERE DO SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPISTS WORK?

Speech and Language Therapists work in a variety of settings such as nurseries, schools, clinics and other locations in the community.
