Maths at Coleshill Heath School

At Coleshill Heath School, we have planned our curriculum using a ‘blocked approach’ for teaching Maths. This is to ensure the children have time to fully deepen their own understanding of the mathematical concepts. The way in which the curriculum is planned out, is so that the children can build upon previously taught concepts. to develop their mathematical thinking, so they understand the mathematical concepts. Children will have access to concrete, pictorial and abstract examples throughout a lesson or a series of lessons.

Every child, regardless of their ability, will be exposed to challenge throughout their learning journey. They will be given the chance to reason and explain their mathematical thinking through the choice of activities.

Through verbal feedback and hot marking, children’s misconceptions are addressed (group of children or whole class, if needed), and their learning needs will be be moved on accordingly.

We begin each Maths lesson with 'Retrieval Practice' which enables our children to retrieve prior knowledge. Children move onto exploring their Maths through an 'Anchor Task', where they can show their mathematical thinking using concrete resources, as well as showing their understanding through the use of pictures and explanation. Children will explore their Anchor Task with their peer, so that they are able to articulate their thinking and learn from each other.
